San Sebastian International Film Festival will have a Czech representative in its short film programme. Film Sugar and Salt by director Adam Martinec from FAMU will compete for two different awards in the Nest Film Students section with another 13 student short films from all over the world.

After last year’s presence of Imprisoned by Damián Vondrášek in the student competition, which was named International Film Students Meeting at that time, now, it is the second time in a row that a Czech short film from FAMU will be screened at the biggest film festival in Spanish-speaking world.

Sugar and Salt is a story about a group of friends who arrive every year at a remote and secluded place to celebrate their friendship. Now they're arriving for the 36th time, but this year is going to be different to the previous ones. Staña lost his battle with cancer, and for the first time ever there are only five friends. In the blooming spring nature, they kill a lamb with their own hands and drink to Staña's memory.

This subtle movie about becoming old and dealing with one‘s own mortality was shot mainly with non-actors and with no scripted dialog. „We knew each other well and there was a mutual intimate trust, most of the actors already went through an experience of losing somebody really close“, explains Adam Martinec, who was inspired by Ivan Passer and his Intimate Lighting.
