Fiction

Peter is a law student in Prague, Jacob studies philosophy there. They are close friends until Imro, a Romany youth, appears on the scene during their summer vacation tour of Slovakia. Imro loves Eržika who has committed an offence against the ancient tradition by breaching the fidelity vow. The vow is law. In a fit of jealousy, Imro murders his fiancée. He awaits two punishments: one from the majority white-race society, the other from his own Romany community. Peter and Jacob closely follow Imro’s tragic lot, and their views concerning matters of justice and punishment begin to differ dramatically. Eventually, their academic polemic evolves into a major clash of attitudes toward life that nearly destroys their friendship. On whose side does truth lie?
