The second film of Agnieszka Smoczynska is among 11 first or second features selected for the 57th Semaine de la Critique taking place May 9 - 17 during Cannes Film Festival.

Fugue tells the story of a woman’s impossible return to her family life, infusing this psychological thriller with fantasy. Thanks to its brilliant directing and powerful interpretation, the film conveys the insanity-driven anguish that will upset the family balance.

Fugue is about the social taboo concerning motherhood and that women are socially pressured to accept this role without hesitation. What if it isn’t always the case? What if a woman had a possibility to forget about giving birth, having a child? Would she choose it again?”  - said Smoczynska about her upcoming film.

The main producer is Agnieszka Kurzydlo from Polish outfit MD4 with Karla Stojáková from Czech company Axman Production and Jonas Kellagher from Swedish CommonGround acting as co-producers. The international sales are handled by Alpha Violet. The production of the film was supported by the Czech Film Fund with the amount 100 000 EUR. The film was also supported by the Polish Film Institute, Eurimages, Odra-Film, Mazovia Film Fund and Film i Vast.

Agnieszka Smoczynska, born in 1978 in Polish Wroclaw, graduated at Krzysztof Kieślowski Faculty of Radio and Television University of Silesia in Katowice, Wajda School and Cultural Studies at University of Wrocław.
