The Czech Film Fund announced the support for production of documentaries. Eight of the total of 18 submitted projects succeeded and were granted altogether CZK 12 million (EUR 470 588). The Council was interested mostly in stories of interesting personalities from different parts of the world.

The highest support CZK 2 million (EUR 78 431) was granted to Filip Remunda’s It’s Not Moscow Here!, produced by Hypermarket film. The documentary is a portrait of Vitaly from Russia, a record holder in winter swimming, who is a nuclear physicist by education but works as bricklayer or repairman, and who is also a great admirer of Vladimir Putin.

Two projects which thematize the refugee crises were supported in this call. In Citizen Miko, Robin Kvapil follows an unconventional Czech truck driver named Miko who co-founded an organization to help refugees. The documentary, produced by Silk Films, was supported with CZK 1,6 million (EUR 62 745). We Have Refugees Here! (Máme tady uprchlíky) is a time-lapse documentary about a Syrian family with six children who legally moved to Prague and now tries to fit into Czech society. Markéta Ekrt Válková’s project is produced by Negativ and received CZK 1,6 million (EUR 62 745) for the production.

Another time-lapse and observational documentary which succeeded in this call is Andrea Culková’s Tepich – The Magic Carpet. The documentarist was granted CZK 1,8 million (EUR 70 588) for the project in which she focuses on Libor Hůlka, an artist who tries to resume the production of hand-knotted carpets, using a traditional method to do so.

In his new documentary, Out of Force (Síla), celebrated author Martin Mareček (Over the Hills, Solar Eclipse, Source) follows one of Czech’s most popular film critics and opinion leaders, Kamil Fila, who fights with his own demons and depression. Czech Film Fund supported the documentary portrait with the amount of CZK 1,4 million (EUR 54 902).

Adéla Komrzý and Tomáš Bojar (Off Sides, FC Roma) prepare Art Talent Show (Zkouška umění), a documentary about three difficult talent exams to Prague’s AVU (Academy of Fine Arts) and about the importance of their results, which will determine who will shape the character of fine art in the future. The project, produced by GPO Platform, was granted CZK 1,7 million (EUR 66 667).

In co-operation with Bio Illusion, Karel Žalud observes the work of 7 Czech scientists who prepare the unique project of oases in the desert, which will be introduced at EXPO 2020. The documentary called Let There Be Water (Budiž voda) was granted CZK 400 000 (EUR 15 686).
