Documentary films

a

Czech documentaries, be it The Visitors by Veronika Lišková or I'm Not Everything I Want to Be by Klára Tasovská, are regularly featured in the festival selections all around the globe and to a large extent shape the perception of Czech film abroad. Here at the Czech Film Center, we are committed to documentary films on several levels. First and foremost, we work with international festivals focusing exclusively on documentaries, as well as festivals with documentary sections. We organize a presentation of Czech documentaries in progress Czech Joy in the Spotlight at the Ji.hlava IDFF. Since its launch in 2023, we have been offering a comprehensive overview of all the Czech-produced documentary films in various stages of development in the Upcoming Projects database. We publish the CZECH FILM magazine, containing many interesting articles about Czech documentary films.

What we do

  • We collect and process information regarding Czech documentary films, including their foreign and domestic release dates.
  • We prepare the database of upcoming and finished Czech documentaries.
  • For the Czech film professionals, we regularly update the calendar of all the major film festivals and film markets.
  • We cooperate closely with the programming departments of foreign and Czech film festivals all year round, informing them about current Czech productions and recommending Czech documentaries for the festival programme.
  • We provide previews or full documentaries for consideration, and connect festivals with domestic film professionals to facilitate communication.
  • During the festivals, we help present Czech documentary filmmaking to foreign film professionals.
  • We help Czech filmmakers and producers to come up with the optimal festival strategies.
  • Every year we promote Czech documentary filmmaking at Berlinale, Visions du Réel, Cannes IFF, Ji.hlava IDFF, DOK.Leipzig, IDFA and others.
  • We also organise additional events to raise the profile of Czech documentary cinema. These include networking events at festivals at IDFA, Visions du Réel or DOK.Leipzig.
  • Our portfolio also includes cooperation on thematically or regionally focused sections, such as Věra Chytilová's retrospective at Doclisboa 2017, Helena Třeštíková's retrospective at IDFA 2018, or the focus on the Visegrad region at FIPADOC 2021.
  • We provide basic PR services, including the monitoring of the participation of Czech documentary films or talents abroad and informing the press and general public about their notable successes via newsletters and social media (Facebook, Instagram, Threads).
  • We assist with creation of production and development strategies for emerging documentary films.
  • We advise filmmakers and producers how to find the co-production partners.
  • We collaborate with foreign sales agencies, alerting them of upcoming films, devising sale strategies with them.
  • We organize a presentation of Czech documentaries in progress Czech Joy in the Spotlight at the Ji.hlava IDFF.
  • As members of European Film Promotion, we participate on several ongoing programs, namely The Changing Face of Europe: New European Documentaries at Hot Docs, Toronto, Producer on the Move at IFF Cannes, and Europe! Voices of Women in Film at Sydney Film Festival.
  • We collaborate with the Dok.inkubator and the Institute of Documentary Films (IDF).
  • We publish the CZECH FILM magazine three times a year, which contains many interesting articles about Czech film, including the documentary film production.
