Animation, fiction, experimental — shorts of every genre were made in the Czech Republic last year. The best of them have been selected for the new Czech Short Films collection, and is available online on filmcenter.cz.

The films in the annual collections are selected each year by a jury of film professionals, who are in some way connected to short films and experienced in the field. This year’s jury consisted of Marek Hovorka, director of the Jihlava International Documentary Film Festival; Karel Spěšný, director of the Prague Short Film Festival; Pavel Horáček, film historian and program director of the Anifilm International Festival in Třeboň; Dan Vadocký, sales manager at Negativ Film Production, and Lucie Česálková, pedagogue, film historian, writer and editor.

In total, 110 shorts of every genre applied to the Czech Film Center this year, with the jury selecting 14 finalists.
Many of the films have taken part in foreign and domestic film festivals., or will do so shortly – The Kite by Martin Smatana premieres at berlinale Generation Kplus in February, while Apart by Diana Cam Van Nguyen was succesfully presented at IFF Rotterdam or at Premiers Plans in Angers in January. Not to forget Reconstruction by Jiří Havlíček and Ondřej Novák, that premiered in Locarno Festival in August 2018, or Sugar and Salt by Adam Martinec represented Czech film students in San Sebastian.
