European Film Academy nominated two Czech films for the European Film Awards 2020. The Painted Bird is nominated for best European Film and director Agnieszka Holland received a nomination in the European Director category for Charlatan.

The Painted Bird, directed and produced by Václav Marhoul an also made with contribution from Certicon, Czech Television, Eduard & Milada Kučerovi, Innogy and Richad Kaucký, received the nomination in the category best European Film.

Czech-Ukrainian-Slovak adaptation of the Jerzy Kosiński's eponymic novel premiered last year at the Venice Film Festival in the main competition and it was than screened at the Toronto IFF or Chicago IFF and at dozens of festivals all over the world. The Czech Film Fund supported last year's Czech Oscar candidate with EUR 608 000 in both development and production stages.

World-famous director Angieszka Holland was nominated in the European Director category for her Czech film Charlatan. A drama about Czechoslovak herbalist Jan Mikolášek, who was used and persecuted by both nazi and communist regimes, is produced by Šárka Cimbalová & Kevan Van Thompson of Marlene Film Production and co-produced by Barrandov Studio, CertiCon, Czech Television and MagicLab.

Czech-Irish-Polish-Slovak film premiered earlier this year at the Berlinale and it was also supported by the Czech Film Fund in both development and production stages - with EUR 512 000.

The winners were scheduled to be presented in Reykjavík, Iceland on December 12, 2020. In the end, the awards ceremony will take place online and it will be streamed from the European Film Academy's seat, Berlin, on Saturday, 12 December 2020.
