In the opera, Carmen is a worker in a tobacco factory while in the musical she is a circus star who has come to a Spanish seaside town right at the time that the mayor’s daughter Katerina gets engaged to the policeman José Rivera. Both have pure and naive characters, which definitely cannot be said about the Mafioso mayor Mendez and his main henchman, police Captain Zuniga. While José is impatient and would like the engaged couple's love to be more than just platonic, the pious Katarína is firmly and steadfastly set on waiting for her wedding night and neither José’s urgings nor the pragmatic advice of her Aunt Inéz can change her mind. José tries to reconcile himself to Katarina’s rebuttals, but his first encounter with Carmen turns his life inside out. He futilely tries to explain to her, and especially to himself, that he is betrothed and, moreover, that he has an obligation to his job. But the force that pulls them together is so strong that it not only surprises José, but even Carmen herself.
