Dan Krameš’ black-and-white documentary captures Czech-Jewish composer Jan Klusák, court composer of the Czechoslovak New Wave, in the axis temporum (axis of time) between the ages of 70 and 75 with incomparable vitality, charm and wit. Following the composition of a major piece through to its performance, the film also allows us glimpses of Klusák’s childhood through photos of his beloved father, murdered in Auschwitz. Klusák freshly characterizes the various periods of his life, both happy and difficult, when his music could not be performed. Klusák’s destiny mirrors the most tragic moments in the 20th century history. Everything is permeated by his music – music as mindset.
