Martin Friedmann, a Jewish boy, was born in 1926 in Bánovce nad Bebravou (western Slovakia). His story would hardly be extraordinary, had he not succeeded in escaping deportation to a concentration camp thanks to his exceptional football talent and a few lucky coincidences. Today he lives in L.A. under the name Martin Petrášek and is proud of his Slovak roots. Why and how did he arrive at this name, and why does he use it today?
