The main hero, Potok, works as a designer in a small theatre. He is around thirty and his life has not really taken him anywhere. He observes his surroundings and himself with disdain. His aimless life only changes when he meets Černá. The infatuated pair escapes from the city. But they once again inescapably run up against human self-interest, superficiality and bad taste. Potok retreats to his former skepticism, which leads to the total disintegration of their relationship. Černá leaves him and the despondent Potok slowly arrives at a more conciliatory attitude to the world, where there is no longer any room for great love and dark romance. Unlike Jáchym Topol’s literary work, which takes place during the three years after 1989, the film leaves out any specification of time. It concentrates on the hero’s internal conflicts, which are timeless.
