The Director is in a difficult situation: the shooting of the film has been cancelled, his production company is failing, and his long-term relationship with a famous actress is all over. The Director doesn’t give up though: instead of going to see Sergej in order to pay him back, he buys an old 8 mm camera in a second-hand shop and 8 mm film, “borrows” his ex-girlfriend’s car without her knowing it, and hits the road. He trusts that he is capable of shooting his yearned-for film all by himself. Then he starts spending Sergej’s money, though he knows that he isn’t exactly Mr. Friendly. On top of all this, the car he is driving is on the list of stolen vehicles. He gradually starts picking up passengers: the Hitchhiker, a childishly peculiar, monosyllabic fellow, and the Girl, concealing pure delight in a child’s delicate body. On the road the Director goes over his life with an emphasis on his love life, which is not entirely flattering, and tries to make his film. The filming doesn’t go as planned, and moreover the Director’s desire for the Girl blinds him to such a degree that he even leaves his friend the Hitchhiker. The spark of faith that he finds inside himself enables him to repent, giving him a chance of redemption. The friends’ paths eventually diverge, the film stock is lost, and the film never sees the light of day. But the Director still has hope…
