Julie is a carefree thirteen-year-old girl who lives with her father in Berlin and has everything she can think of. However, now she is quite annoyed at her father for taking her to Bohemia, to her mother’s pension in the Šumava region. She refuses to understand why she cannot travel with her father to China for a vacation, or why she can’t at least stay with her friends in Berlin. She is unable to forgive her mother for abandoning her many years ago and for the fact that, because of an affluent hunter from abroad, her mother has dismantled her room. One day, sulking as she sits in front of the pension, she witnesses with disinterest a little German circus have an accident, one which will force it to stay around the village for some time. At this point, Julie has no idea yet what kind of adventures are awaiting her and the other Czech and German children, for the adults are planning to sacrifice the circus bear as a forest animal earmarked to be killed.
