A big-budget production by the famous director Nikita Michalkov which tells a story going on at the end of the last century under the govern of tsar Alexander III. The central motive of the film is a love story of a young American (Julia Ormond), who comes to Saint Petersburg, and a student of military academy (Oleg Menshikov).
