The film tells the story of a single mother, Hedvika, and her newborn, Adelka. Hedvika is struggling with a lack of maternal affection towards her daughter. One night she discovers the diaries of her late father who recorded recollections of her own childhood. She decides to overcome the absence of closeness she feels by reading them and visiting the places she used to know as a child. Hedvika uncovers a painful, buried family history and moves towards her own future, despite the strong disapproval of her mother who remains unable to reconcile her bitterness towards the past. The Absence of Closeness is an intimate psychological drama that takes place at the end of one hot summer.
