In 1984, communist Czechoslovakia, 15-year-old Mara lives with her father, Alexander, in the rural village of Ruské, in the distant eastern region. Mara dreams of becoming a pilot, but Alexander, a Ruthenian farmer and a widower, refuses to let her leave for the aviation academy, fearing losing her. Meanwhile, the government plans to flood the village for a water reservoir. When Mara forges her father’s signature and is accepted to the academy, Alexander forbids her from going. After a stroke leaves him partially paralyzed, Mara brings him back home. As the village faces resettlement and isolation, the father and daughter gradually find reconciliation.
