Twelve-year-old Ariana, growing up in an orphanage, meets Archivaldo, an old alchemist. He offers her the opportunity to become a student at the Alchemist Academy. Ariana must pass four entrance exams, which her teachers: Lora and Mertura are supposed to prepare her for. At the Academy, Ariana forms strong friendships and gets the chance to uncover secrets about herself and her parents. However, to learn the truth, she must take a risk and join forces with a dangerous witch named Murien.
