Czech film heads to Sundance once again! An international co-production How to Divorce During the War (Lithuania, Luxembourg, Ireland, Czech Republic) by Lithuanian director and screenwriter Andrius Blaževičius, co-produced by Jakub Košťál and Vratislav Šlajer of Bionaut and supported by the Czech Audiovisual Fund, landed in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition.
Set in Vilnius 2022, the film follows high-flying executive Marija, who chooses the worst possible moment for an honest conversation with her husband Vytas about divorcing – just one day before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine goes into full scale. Now the couple must navigate the process of separation as it collides with a refugee and mid-life crisis.
Last year, the World Cinema Competition also featured a Czech minority co-production – DJ Ahmet (North Macedonia, Czech Republic, Serbia, Croatia) by Georgi M. Unkovski, co-produced by Alter Vision and Analog Vision on the Czech side. The film eventually scooped the World Cinema Dramatic Audience Award. Another awarded Czech film was Mr. Nobody Against Putin (Denmark, Czech Republic), produced by Czech production outfit PINK. This high-profile documentary film, which was recently nominated for the PGA Award for Outstanding Producer of Documentary Motion Picture by the Producers Guild of America, garnered the World Cinema Documentary Special Jury Award at the 2025 Sundance.
The 42nd Sundance Film Festival will run from January 22 to February 1, 2026.
