One of the most successful Czech films of the year in terms of participation at international festivals is undoubtedly Ondřej Hudeček's short film Peacock. Now it has been chosen as the first Czech short film ever to compete at the prestigious Sundance festival.
This success was preceded by other festivals and awards. Peacock was first presented as part of the Future Frames programme of young talent at this year's Karlovy Vary Festival, while it had its international premiere at the Toronto IFF and it was also chosen for the NewFest LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) festival in New York and also went to the Welsh city of Cardiff, where it was nominated for the Iris Award for the best LGBT film of the year. At the Prague Mezipatra festival it received the special jury award, at the recent FAMUFEST the award for best screenplay, editing and film.
Peacock focuses on a key moment in the life of a famous 19th-century dramatist, Ladislav Stroupežnický. It depicts the romance between Stroupežnický and Jan Aleš, which forever changed his life. While he was seventeen Stroupežnický mistakenly shot at a poacher, after which, in a fit of madness, he tried to kill himself. The shot tore off his lower jaw and nose and his face was disfigured to the end of his life.
"This is one of the most exciting films in a very long time. Filled with sly humor, bubbling with creativity and assembled as a coherent work of fiction that draws on reality for inspiration, Peacock is as colorful as its English title suggests. It is with great thrill and enthusiasm that we await Hudeček's first feature film, " said André Crous from The Prague Post.
Peacock was chosen for the Sundance festival from the total number of 8712 submitted short films as one of 13 foreign fiction films. It is the very first short Czech film and only the second Czech film to be presented at this festival in the main competition. This success is only the greater since it is a student film, which is an exception at large festivals of this type.
