In the early 20th century, a young miner named Peter moves to Silesia to work in coal mines. After causing an accident with a draft horse, he’s sent to deeper tunnels. Here he has visions he sees as messages from the soul of the underground. These experiences change his behavior and worldview. While local spiritualists consider him a medium and fellow miners think he's crazy, the church sees him as a heretic. His pregnant wife initially supports him, but gradually begins to doubt his mental health. After collapsing in the mine, he’s diagnosed with carbon monoxide poisoning. After recovery, his visions retreat. One day the sounds return and Peter warns the miners of danger. They ignore him, but the mine soon collapses. Peter escapes with several colleagues, but many remain buried alive.
