Juliana explores questions of otherness and her own genetic trail, investigating the stereotypes that have created the redhead. Supposedly, they will be extinct within a hundred years.
How Long Until We Die Out? is a documentary exploring human otherness through the minority of red-haired people. Why do some claim gingers will die out in a hundred years? Juliana, the ‘only ginger in the family,’ reflects on her own otherness. As the film’s narrator, she engages with fellow redheads, collectively uncovering myths and stereotypes. Suddenly, these ideas seem applicable to any minority group. This personal film examines not only the potential extinction of redheads but also the global extinction of all species. Positioned as pioneers of a modern extinction narrative, redheads symbolize issues of population growth and ecological threats. In an era of rising xenophobia and conspiracy theories, how do we find control? Are we all the same, or fundamentally different—soulless?
