The ambitious engineer Bondy astonishes the world with his groundbreaking Carburetor, a source of inexhaustible energy that he secretly stole from his gifted classmate Elen. He hides her away in a mountain estate to silence the truth. Thanks to the invention and his own ruthlessness, Bondy rises to power and becomes a symbol of modern progress. Yet the Carburetor produces not only energy but also the Absolute—a force that turns people into obedient, blissful, easily controlled beings. As Prague succumbs to its influence, Elen escapes and tries to avert the coming disaster. At the grand launch of the giant Carburetor on Letná, her attempt fails. In a single flash, the world becomes perfectly obedient—and perfectly lost.
