I need to leave to keep returning.
A postcard from the past, a fleeting memory, a dream—Rovnjina is a poetic return to the filmmaker’s native village. Ruski Kerestur, a Ruthenian village in the flatlands of Vojvodina, once a place of escape, now calls him back, urging him to gather its fragments before they vanish. Through flashes of memory and dream, the dynamism of 16mm Bolex captures people, landscapes, and artifacts—an imagined archive of care and resilience. But the stillness of the village is unsettled by the tremor of change: in autumn 2024, protests sweep through Serbia, voices rising in a fight for justice. The sound of church bells blends with chants of unrest. In these gestures—quiet and collective—the filmmaker confronts the paradox of belonging: I need to leave to keep returning.
