Standing over the cradle of newborn Urban are three Fates: two nice ones, who wish him wealth and love, and the third evil one, predicting poverty and endless hardship. Urban is soon orphaned and a miserly watchmaker takes him in as an apprentice. When Urban grows up, he falls in love with the watchmaker’s daughter, Laura. Her father sends him off into the world to seek a watch that can warn of death. If Urban fails to bring it, Laura will never become his wife. Urban sets off on a long journey full of obstacles and tasks he must face with bravery, watchmaking skills, and a good heart. His love for Laura drives him onward just as the three Fates are ever at his back, two to help him along and one constantly trying to trip him up.
