The Czech Film and Television Academy (ČFTA) presented the 33rd annual Czech Lion Awards on Saturday evening, celebrating the best achievements in Czech cinema and television over the past year.
The top prize for Best feature film went to Cannes-premiered Caravan by Zuzana Kirchnerová, produced by Dagmar Sedláčková of MasterFilm (on the photo), while Franz by Agnieszka Holland, produced by Holland and Šárka Cimbalová of Marlene Film Production, emerged as the most decorated title of the evening, winning a total of four Czech Lion trophies.
Katarína Gramatová won the Best director award with her feature debut Promise, I’ll Be Fine, co-produced by Julie Marková Žáčková of NOCHI FILM for the Czech side. Best animated film award went to Tales from the Magic Garden, a multinational portmonteau feature, produced by Martin Vandas and Alena Vandasová of MAUR film on the Czech side. Better Go Mad in the Wild by Miro Remo, produced by Tomáš Hrubý and Pavla Janoušková Kubečková of nutprodukce, received the Best documentary feature, Best cinematography and Best editing award.
In the acting categories, Kateřina Falbrová won Best actress for her performance in Ondřej Provazník's Broken Voices, and Idan Weiss received the Best actor award for his role in Franz. The award for Best supporting actress went to Juliána Brutovská for Caravan, while Dũng Nguyễn was named Best supporting actor for Summer School, 2001 by Dužan Duong.
The non-statutory Magnesia award for best student film went to Dog and Wolf directed by Terézia Halamová and produced by Natália Pavlove of Other Stories. The award, highlighting emerging talent from Czech film schools and continuing the tradition of supporting the next generation of filmmakers, is presented regularly in cooperation with Mattoni 1873 and the Czech Audiovisual Fund. Dog and Wolf also won the Best short film this year.
The Honorary Czech Lion for Unique contribution to Czech film was awarded to Helena Bezděk Fraňková, former director of the Czech Audiovisual Fund, in recognition of her long-standing contribution to the development and support of the Czech audiovisual industry.
