The Czech Film and Television Academy (CFTA) has announced the nominations for the 33rd annual Czech Lion Awards. Within the framework of the 24 statutory categories, altogether 32 films, television series and miniseries out of the total number of 94 works of art premiered in the year of 2025 made it to the second round of voting. The most nominations have gone to the films Franz, Broken Voices, Caravan, Summer School, 2001, Promise I’ll Be Fine and the miniseries The Well.
The voting of the members of the CFTA, which unites the prominent personalities among film and television professionals, took place from 1st Dec 2025 to 11th Jan 2026.
The opportunity to fight in the final battle has been given to the film Franz by Agnieszka Holland with 15 nominations. The movie has been inspired by the life and work as well as imagination of the writer Franz Kafka. 13 nominations have been given to the movie Broken Voices by Ondřej Provazník, which brings up the topic of abusing in the setting of a world-famous girls’ choir. It has been closely followed by the 11 nominations for the poetic road movie Caravan about freedom, various faces of love and the desire to start living at last by Zuzana Kirchnerová. The academics have also given 8 nominations to the debut feature film by Dužan Duong called Summer School, 2001, which brings an authentic insight into the Vietnamese community in Czechia. The second round of voting has been opened also to the minimalist drama about adolescence in a remote Slovak village called Promise, I’ll Be Fine by the debutant Katarína Gramatová as it has obtained seven nominations. The miniseries The Well made by TV NOVA and directed by Tereza Kopáčová succeeded with five nominations and four nominations have gone coincidently to the feature films Fichtelberg by Šimon Koudela, the miniseries King of Šumava Season 2 - Agent Walker produced by TV NOVA and directed by Damián Vondrášek as well as to the documentary feature Better Go Mad in the Wild directed by Miro Remo. Three nominations have gone to the film of Czech Television production called Mom, directed by Jiří Strach. Within the acting categories two nominations have been obtained by Anna Geislerová for her roles in the film Caravan and in the series The Offspring, Elizaveta Maximová for the television film Mom and series The Kiddo and finally also Ivan Trojan for his roles in the films Franz and Invincibles.
The Czech Lion for the best feature film and also for the best director and best screenplay could be awarded to the films Franz, Caravan, Summer School, 2001, Promise, I’ll Be Fine and Broken Voices. In the category the best documentary feature the nominations have been obtained by the films What About Petey?, The Impossibility, Better Go Mad in the Wild, The Other One and Change My Mind. The miniseries King of Šumava Season 2 - Agent Walker, Moloch Files and The Well as well as the series OCTOPUS II and The Offspring have succeeded in the category of the best miniseries or series. Among nominees are also the following five five animated films: I Died in Irpin, Stone of Destiny, tiny film about rape, Tales from the Magic Garden and Wolfie. In March one of the lion statuettes will also be awarded to one of the five short films: The Wayfarer, Hey, Czechs!, Cultural Front, Dog and Wolf or First Patrol.
As part of the gala evening, the non-statutory Magnesia Award for Best Student Film will also be presented. The award is presented regularly in cooperation with Mattoni 1873 and the Czech Audiovisual Fund. The prize, which includes a financial award of CZK 100,000 sponsored by Mattoni 1873, may be awarded to Nebe Motýlová (tiny film about rape), Terézia Halamová (Dog and Wolf), Stefan Lambert (Pierced Souls), Marie-Magdalena Kochová (The Tower), or Philippe Kastner (Wolfie).
The ceremonial gala evening of presenting the Czech Lion awards will take place for the first time in the venue of Prague Congress Centre on 14th March. Traditionally the Czech Television will offer a live broadcast on the CT1 channel. The evening on television as well as in the venue will be hosted by the stand-up comedian Bianca Cristovao. The creative supervision of the evening will be once again in the hands of Matěj Chlupáček.
