Fiction

Austro-Hungarian Empire, 1782: Young Viennese journalist Bernard tries to stop the trials and executions of innocent Roma men triggered by his own fabricated article. Based on the true events.

Upper Hungary, 1782: a scrivener Bernard (27), a Viennese Czech and tutor to the children of local administrator, meets the prosecutor Nanay, who arrives to investigate the purported cannibalism among the local Roma. Bernard has a secret: when he wrote for a Viennese newspaper, he copied an English article on African cannibal tribes and blithely located it in Upper Hungary. So he knows that the rumors of the local man-eating Roma are false and witnesses in horror how his journalistic lie turns in into the torture and execution of innocent men. Bernard doesn’t dare to confess the truth. Instead, he tries to find evidence that would cast doubt on the guilt of those accused and sets off to track the alleged victims of András, the only Roma man still refusing to confess.
