Fifteen Czech films of various formats are featured in the program of the 29th Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, or PÖFF, running from 7 to 23 November. The program hosts several world premieres, notably the world premiere of the colorful family adventure The Bugaboo by Kateřina Karhánková and Tomáš Pavlíček in the Children's Competition Programme at the Just Film children's and youth film sub-festival, as well as many celebrated films that debuted at the Berlinale, Annecy, Sundance, Tribeca, Locarno, and other major festivals around the world.

The Official Selection

The Moon is a Father of Mine (GE, DE, LU, BG, CZ, TR) by George Ovashvili, co-produced by Karla Stojáková of Axman Production, will see its world premiere in the Official Selection – Competition program. China Sea (LT, PL, TW, CZ) by Jurgis Matulevičius, co-produced by Jakub Košťál of Bionaut, world premieres in the Critics' Picks Competition, while Hunger Strike Breakfast (LT, CZ, LV) by Karolis Kaupinis, co-produced by Mikuláš Novotný of Background Films, will vie for the awards in the Baltic Film Competition. Tribeca-premiered Dead Language (IL, PL, CZ) by Mihal Brezis and Oded Binnun, co-produced by Pavel Strnad of Negativ, and Venice-premiered Father (SK, CZ, PL) by Tereza Nvotová, produced by Karel Chvojka and Miloš Lochman of moloko film, take part in the Best of Festivals.

Doc@PÖFF Competition, an official documentary film competition at Tallinn, hosts Berlinale-premiered Time to the Target (LV, CZ, UA) directed by Vitaly Mansky and co-produced by Filip Remunda of Hypermarket Film. Another internationally acclaimed documentary, Mr. Nobody Against Putin (DK, CZ) by David Borenstein and Pavel Talankin, produced by Radovan Síbrt, Alžběta Karásková and Petra Dobešová of PINK on the Czech side, graces the Best of Docs program. Both films were recently awarded at the Ji.hlava IDFF.

Furthermore, the Old Gold: Classic Films Come to Life, features the restored version of the Czechoslovak New Wave classic Closely Watched Trains by Jiří Menzel, the recipient of the 1968 Oscar for Best Foreign Film.

The 25th edition of Just Film, the sub-festival dedicated to youth and children's films, hosts the world premire of The Bugaboo (CZ, SK) by Kateřina Karhánková and Tomáš Pavlíček, produced by Jakub Mahler and Tomáš Michálek of MasterFilm (CZ) and Ivan Ostrochovský and Katarína Tomková of Punkchart films (SK), in the Children's Competition Programme. Locarno-premiered Pixie. The New Beginning (PL, CZ) by Polish director Krzystof Komander, co-produced by Michal Sikora of Lonely Production and Viktor Tauš of HEAVEN'S GATE, takes part in the Children's Rights Programme.

9th edition of PÖFF Shorts, Tallinn's short film and animation sub-festival, offers tiny film about rape by Nebe Motýlová in the Shorts New Talents Competition: Animation, Berlinale-premiered Stone of Destiny by Julie Černá in the Shorts New Talents Competition: Animation, Dog and Wolf by Terézia Halamová, which debuted at the Karlovy Vary IFF as part of the European Film Promotion's Future Frames program, in the Shorts New Talents Competition: Live-action, and finally, Annecy-premiered Joko (PL, DE, CZ) by Izabela Plucińska and I Died in Irpin (CZ, SK, UA) by Anastasia Falileieva in the Shorts Panorama.

Industry@Tallinn & Baltic Event

Industry@Tallinn & Baltic Event, running 14 to 21 November, features four Czech projects this year: No Salvation Coming, the third feature by Vojtěch Strakatý, takes part in the Baltic Event Co-production Market, The Hour between Dog and Wolf by Terézia Halamová, a feature-lenght version of her short film Dog and Wolf, will be presented in the Script Pool program, Moloch Files, a TV series by Lukáš Hanulák, heads to the TV Beats Screenings, and Frontwards, a TV series by Michal Kollár, to the TV Beats Co-financing Market.
