Have you ever grieved someone who hasn't died yet?
A raw, self-made and deeply personal work, IF PIGEONS TURNED TO GOLD cuts into addiction and intergenerational trauma, capturing several years in the lives of four family members. Pepa, the director, records on an iPhone and tries to understand why their beloved older brother and cousins live unhoused and experience substance addiction. Formally inventive and playful, diaristic footage enters into dialogue with stylised memories, AI-animated photographs and graphic interventions, shaping a plural voice that negotiates with the past. Unsentimentally, the film traces the causes and fallout of addiction, asking where love ends, control begins, and what respect truly demands: to save, or to let go.

Berlinale Series Market Selects 2026
Fiction / CZ 2026 / 6x52 min
Directed by: Zuzana Kirchnerová
Produced by: Klára Follová – Oneplay (CZ)
She wrote about love. She lived in hell.
A six-part series inspired by the life of Simona Monyová, a successful writer from Brno who struggled with domestic violence for many years. It tells the story of a strong woman who pursued her goals, but was also an ordinary mother of three, dreaming of romantic love and a harmonious family. Just like her readers, to whom she was a friend they could carry around in their handbags in the form of a small paperback. Monyová described relationships with humour, sarcasm, and a sense of perspective. Her desire for great love led her to her second husband. However, the initially idyllic relationship gradually turned into a toxic and violent coexistence. Although she eventually managed to walk away from it, her life ended tragically.

Books at Berlinale was launched in 2006 in cooperation with the Frankfurter Buchmesse, making it the first rights market of an A-list film festival to bring producers and literary rights holders together beyond the pitch event.
Out of nearly 100 submissions, ten books have been selected for the 21st edition of Books at Berlinale, which will be presented on February 16 in a pitch event moderated by author Syd Atlas during the Berlinale Co-Production Market.
The Czech Republic (this year’s Frankfurter Buchmesse Guest of Honour) is represented by A Slight Loss of Loneliness by Eli Beneš, which follows Auschwitz survivor Peter Stein in a poetic narrative about loneliness, friendship, survival, and the deep longing for love.

In an interview with cinematographer and director Veronika Donutková, we discuss her work on the documentary Respect Her Game and the TV series Moloch Files. We introduce the production company Beginners's Mind. Read the magazine >> HERE.
